South Omaha Welcomes Thousands To Celebrate Cinco De Mayo This Weekend
Organizers and vendors pieced together carnival rides and food stands Thursday, signaling Cinco de Mayo’s return to South Omaha this weekend.
Live music and entertainment are returning to the now nine-block festival stretching along South 24 Street, starting Friday, running all weekend long.
“We want to recognize our culture and our history, and what we contribute to the Omaha fabric of life here,” organizer Marcos Mora said.
The expanded festival from L Street to Q Street means more room for vendors, who are still reeling from pandemic setbacks. Mora says thousands of people from surrounding states generate a big boost for the local economy.
“You’re talking about millions of dollars,” Mora said. “A lot of people are spending way more than $20, so you’re talking about millions of dollars.”
This year celebrates 100 years of the festival in Omaha. This year’s parade recognizes more than a dozen military veterans.
The parade is scheduled for Saturday, May 7 at 10 a.m.

This Weekend In Omaha
COIN || The Admiral at Omaha, NE,
My husband and I are meeting up with some friends in Omaha this weekend. We’ve never been, and we are looking for a few ideas for places to go/things to see. We are all in our late 20’s/early 30’s. We enjoy laid back things like sight seeing, wine drinking, movies, bars, shopping, etc. We are planning on being close to downtown for dinner too, so any suggestions would be appreciated for that.
There’s not a lot of ‘ sights ‘ to see in Omaha actually. You probably have seen the posts regarding museums, gardens, zoo’s etc. The Old Market area and the Midtown crossing area just west of downtown are popular areas with bars and restaurants there is always something going on down there. For music you might want to check out Omahaatnight web site or omahanightlife or a google search. There is a movie theater in midtown crossing- I think they even serve food and drinks.
For shopping maybe check out Village Pointe at 168th and West Dodge road – straight west of Downtown , or Regency Court or One Pacific place. There is no decent shopping to speak of in or near downtown.
The nearby Casinos are just across the river not far from downtown in Council Bluffs, Iowa – Ameristar has free live music Saturday nights and Harrah’s has concerts which you can find posted on their website..
